GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.
The attention of the Community is called to the subjoined Postal Notification which has been drawn up with a view to afford greater facilities in the posting of correspondence by the Mails for Europe, &c.
It is to be borne in mind that the proposed arrangements are entirely experimental, and, should they be found impracticable, will be discontinued.
The probability of their being practicable depends chiefly on the bulk of the Letters being posted on the day before the Mail departs. It is therefore hoped that the Public will assist the Officers of the Post Office by posting all Correspondence as it is closed, instead of reserving it to post with their later despatches between 7 and 9 the following morning.
The new arrangement will apply to all British Contract Packets, except those that depart on a Sunday, when it will be necessary to follow the old rules.
By Order,
Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 9th November, 1865.
POST OFFICE NOTIFICATION,
W. H. ALEXANDER,
Acting Colonial Secretary.
It is hereby notified for general information that the times for closing the mails by the British Contract Packets will be as follows until further notice, viz.:
For receipt of Registered Letters 6 P.M. on the day prior to the Packet's departure.
Ordinary Letters and Newspapers 9 A.M., Late Letters 1 P.M., and Late Newspapers, Books or Packets of Patterns, Noon, on the day of the Packet's departure.
Correspondence posted after 9 A.M. must bear an extra Eighteen cent Stamp, as a late fee, on each letter, and an extra Two cent Stamp on each Newspaper, Book or Packet of Patterns, in addition to the postage.
Late letters addressed to the United Kingdom via Marseilles, or to Singapore can be posted on board from 1.30 to 1.50 P.M. for a late fee of 48 cents each, in addition to the postage, after which no Letters can be received.
A Box will be kept open from 6 P.M. on the day previous to the Mail's departure to 7 A.M. of that day, for the receipt of correspondence.
When the day of sailing of the Packet falls on a Sunday, the Office will be closed for the receipt of correspondence at 6 P.M. on the preceding Saturday; Letters can however be posted from 6 to past 7 on the following morning for a late fee of Twelve cents each, Newspapers Two cents each.
No alteration will be made in the times of closing the Mails for the French Packets.
