GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

His Excellency the GOVERNOR is pleased to recognize HENRY WILLIAM WOOD, Esquire, as Acting Vice-Consul for Siam, in place of WILLIAM ADAMSON, Esquire, about to leave the Colony, pending the pleasure of Her Majesty's Government, or until further notice.

GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

Tenders will be received at this Office up to noon of Monday, the 13th Proximo, for the Privilege of Preparing and Selling Prepared Opium within this Colony for one year from the first of April next, under the conditions set fortli in Ordinance No. 2 of 1858.

The Honorable CHARLES WILSON MURRAY, Esquire, having, on his departure from this Colony, resigned his Scat in the Legislative Council, His Excellency the GOVERNOR is pleased to appoint THOMAS SUTHERLAND, Esquire, to be a Member of the said Council.

The Honorable THOMAS SUTHERLAND, Esquire, has been this day sworn in accordingly.

POST OFFICE NOTIFICATION.

Arrangements having been made for forwarding from Point de Galle by the French Packets the Mails arriving from Australía in those cases when the French Packets afford prospect of an earlier receipt of the Mails at Hongkong than if they were kept for conveyance by the regular British Contract Packets, it is hereby notified for general information, that as the French Sea Rate of Postage will have to be accounted for by the British Post Office to the Post Office of France when such Mails are conveyed by the French Packet the correspondence contained in them, although fully prepaid at the place of its origin, will be taxed on arrival in this Office at the rate of

7d. for a letter not exceeding an ounce in weight,

1s. 2d. 28. 4d.

and so on adding 1s. 2d. for each ounce or fraction of an ounce after the first ounce, and Newspapers or Prices Current ld. each, which will be collected on delivery of the correspondence in Hongkong.

GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

It is hereby notified that, in accordance with Section 12 of "The Police and Lighting Rate Ordinance 1863," His Excellency the GOVERNOR, by and with the advice of the Executive Council, has fixed the Police Rate for the year 1865 at Eight-and-a-quarter per cent for Houses in the City of Victoria, and in accordance with Section 18 of the same Ordinance at Five per cent for Houses in the Villages of this Island.

The above Rate as regards Houses in Victoria will be levied exclusive of a Lighting Rate of Ome and-a-half per cent under Section 12 of the above Ordinance, and a Half yearly Water Rate of Two per cent per annum under the Provisions of Ordinance No. 12 of 1860.

The Police and Lighting Rates will, under terms of Ordinance 5 of 1863, Section 13, be payable quarterly in advance, at the Colonial Treasury; for the current Quarter between this date and the 18th Instant, and for the subsequent Quarters of the year between the first and last Days of the first Month in cach Quarter.
