GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

The following Decision of the Marine Court of Inquiry into the Loss of the British Ship Tricolor on the Pratas Shoal is published for general information.

By Command,

Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 20th June, 1868.

FINDING.

J. GARDINER AUSTIN, Colonial Secretary.

The Court having considered the evidence adduced, conclude:-

First. That the British Ship Tricolor was wrecked on the Pratas Shoal on the 7th instant, being on

a voyage from Cardiff to Yokohama.

Second. That the Master WILLIAM BRYDE relied too much on the correctness of his position at Noon of the day previous, and did not make a proper allowance for the variable currents which it is known exist in the vicinity of the Pratas Shoal.

-

Third. That the Ship appears to have been well conducted on other occasions when approaching

dangers, and that she was generally a well ordered and properly disciplined Vessel.

The Court, therefore, direct that the Master be severely reprimanded, and cautioned to be more careful for the future.

It appears from the evidence that it has been customary to remove the look-out man from his Post before daylight for the purpose of washing decks, and that this occurred on the morning of the wreck of the Vessel. The Court strongly reprehend a system fraught with so much danger, and, had it been proved that the presence of the look-out man at his Post would have prevented the Loss of the Ship, the Court would have dealt with the Master much more severcly.

Given under our hands, at Hongkong, this 18th Day of June, 1868.

Approved,

C. MAY, 1st Police Magistrate.

H. G. THOMSETT, R.N., Harbor Master, &c.

EDWARD MELLISH, Unofficial Justice of the Peace.

R. N. CAIRNS, Government Marine Surveyor.

JOHN TOWNSEND, Master, Mercantile Marine.

RICHARD GRAVES MACDONNELL,

Governor.
