620 THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 17TH DECEMBER, 1870.
An Inspection of the Government Brigade was held on the 19th November. The Steam and Iland Engines, Hose in use and in store, Fire Ladders, Implements, and personal equipment of the Firemen were examined and found clean and in good order.
An Inspection and Parade of the Government and Volunteer Brigades was held at 3.30 P.M. on the 30th November. The Hand Engine of the Imperial Insurance Company and the Hand Engines of the Chinese Associations were present.
Both Steam Engines were brought into work but there was an escape of steam from a screw in the "manhole" of boiler of No. 1 Engine (similar to that occurring to No 2 Engine last month) in consequence of which (although the Engine would have been worked if imperatively necessary) the fires were drawn. No. 2 Engine was brought into work speedily and satisfactorily with two branches of Delivery Hose.
The Government Hand Engines were found in good order.
The Engine of the Imperial Insurance was in most satisfactory condition and delivered a powerful stream; and the Chinese Associations' Engines were also in order and worked well.
The defect causing escape of steam, which arose from a portion of the packing becoming loose and blowing out, was rectified the same evening.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
The Honorable J. GARDINER Austin,
No. 164.
Colonial Secretary,
HONGKONG.
C. MAY,
