FIRE BRIGADE OFFICE, HONGKONG, 7th October, 1870. SIR,I have the honor to report for the information of His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor that the Monthly Parade and Inspection of the Government and Volunteer Fire Brigades was held on Thursday, the 22nd September ultimo.
The Assembly took place at the Cross Roads, at 5 P.M.; the Government Brigade Engines and the three Hand Engines owned by Chinese Associations were present.
The Steam Engines were ordered to the Praya at the end of Cleverly Street; and the Hand Engines to the Hydrants in Bonham Strand and Jervois Street, near Cleverley Street.
All were brought to work and did so in a thoroughly satisfactory manner. The two Steam Engines delivered six streams of sea-water. One of the Hand Engines was found to work with difficulty, owing to the swelling of some new leather packing; but this was remedied the next morning and the Engines again submitted to trial and found to work with ease.
The 2nd Inspection took place on the 30th September, at 4 P.M., at the Cross Roads. The Engines and Implements were found clean and in good order..
I have the honor to be,
The Honorable J. GARDINER AUSTIN,
Colonial Secretary,
HONGKONG.
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
C. MAY,
Superintendent Fire Brigade.
