The following Hydrographic Notices, received from the Admiralty, are published for the formation of Mariners and others whom it may concern.

No. 10.

CHINA SEA DIRECTORY, VOL. I. Notice No. 5.

The following information of dangers, in the China and Java seas, discovered during the years 1860-1863, has been hed on the anthority of the Netherlands Commission for improving and correcting the charts of the Indian Archipelago.*

(All Bearings are Magnetic. Variation 1° Eusterly in 1870.)

China Sea. The ship Scheweningen struck on an unknown bank in lat. 1° 19′ 19′′ S. and long. 106° 39′ 48′′ E., about bigues E. by N. from Crassock point, the north extremity of Banka island. Immediately after the ship touched, a

ding of 4 fathoms was obtained, and a second sounding showed a depth of 15 fathoms.

North Coast of Banca.-A reef, with only 74 feet water, lies about 13 miles from the shore, and nearly midway between assock point and Cape Tuen. From the shoal, Crassock point bears W. by N. ¦ N., Pulo Pongoh off Čape Tuen S.E.4 3. and Pakoe point S. by E.

Banka Strait.-A rock, with 12 feet over it at low water, lies about 2 cables northward of the Hadjie reef, with Lang Bersiap, the eastern point of Banca island, bearing N. E., and Kalian point lighthouse E. N.

Gaspar Strait.-A reef has been discovered lying N.N.W. 32 miles from the Belvedere rock, also 17 miles distant from pur island, and 28 miles from Brekat point on Bauka island. The position given is in Int. 2° 8' S., long. 107° 1′ 15′′ E.

A reef, with only 6 feet water, lies off the northern end of Pulo Leut. From a position three-quarters of a cable north- *d of the shoal, the northern point of Pulo Leat bore S.W., and the eastern point of Pulo Anak, or Selagin, S. by E. E. Carimata Strait.-A reef, situated on the north-east coast of Billiton, and shown as "doubtful" on the charts, has been and to list. It dries in one spot, and is in lat 2° 37′ S., long. 108° 18′ E.

A bank that dries has been observed off the east coast of Billiton; from the bank Slandak island bears S.W. § W., Cantong island W. by S., and Boesong Madau island N.W. W.; the position given is in lat. 2° 59′ S., long. 108° 1′ E. A reef, with about 6 or 7 feet water, lies near the assigned but doubtful position of a shoal anned Admiral Protet; from Slandok island bears W. & S., and Liendorg, one of the Scharvogel islands, S.S.W., the position given is in lat. 2° 59′ S.,

103° 38′ E.

Greig Shoul.-Careful examination has shown that the position of this danger, off the western coast of Borneo, is lat. 0° 30'S., and long. 103° 25′ E.; from the shoal Panambungan island bears ES.E., and the peak of Carimata island S.S.E. ¡L. The shoal is circular in shape, about 14 cabies in diameter, and has 8 feet water over the shoalest part.

Jasa Sea.-E. † N. from the south point of Peblakan or West, island, distant about 34 miles, is a reef of coral and stone; mis reef extends about one cable north and south, and 24 cables cast and west; there is about 4 feet water over the shoalest *t, and from 4 to 5 fathoms avonud the reef; from it the extremes of Rangat island bore N.W. 4 N. and N.W. by N. spectively.

A zeef also, on which the sea breaks heavily, extends a distance of about 2 cables. (by estimation) from the north and : -th-east sides of Bangat island.

Careful examination has shown that the Siren bank, to be found on some charts in lat. 5° 19′ 30′′ S., long. 100° 34′ 45′ E, does not exist, and that no danger has been found near the assigned position.

No. 11.

INDIAN OCEAN. Eastern Archipelago.

The following information of dangers discovered during 1866-68 has been published on the authority of the Netherlands mission for improving and correcting the charts of the Indian Archipelago.*

Java Sea.-A reef with 15 feet water over it, and 7 to 8 fathoms on its eastern edge, lies about one cable to the thward of the Tambaga rocks in the Sapoedie strait. From the reef the Tambaga rocks hear N.W. by W. and N.E. 4 N.

vetively; the east point of Giliang or Pondy island N. by E. E., and Sarotak point W. § N.

A reef with 4 fathoms water lies to the north-east of Kangeang island, and S. E. 4 miles from the southern. Kalkun Turkey island. The position given is lat. 6° 48' S., long, 115° 44′ E.

Near the north-east Paternosters, in lat. 62 50'S. and long, 118 18′ 30′′ E. the water was observed to be discoloured, A coral reef supposed to exist.

Strait of Macassar.-The Laurel reefs extend from lat. 4° 20′ S. to lat. 4° 36′ S., the shoalest part, with 17 feet water , lying

near the southern extreme.

The ship Sea Serpent, in lat. 3° 56′ S., and long. 117° 23′ E., passed over a bank about a quarter of a mile long, in

4 to 6 fathoms.

A bank that dries, with a reef extending southward of it for about one mile, was discovered in lat. 3° 31′ 50′′ S., long. 750 40 B. Careful investigation has shown that the shoals marked on the cints of the Macassar strait, in lat. 8° 20

Jag. 117° 39′ 30′′ E., and luf. 3° 50′ 10′′ 8., long, 117° 40′ 15′′ E., do not exist.

A rocky shoal with 15 feet water on it lies to the north-west of Tanjong Kaniongan, on the coast of Borneo. From this ak Pulo Kaiongan Kb. Feurs S.E. § S., and the east and west points of Pulo Kantongan Dz., S. L. and South respectively, Sec Admiralty Cuntis:-Eastern Archipelago, Kos, D34, 9412, 9415, and 90a; Macussar strait, Nos. 2033 and 2037; Sulu Archipelago, No. Philippine islands, No. 845; and China Bea, No. 2000 2.
