POST OFFICE NOTIFICATION.

A practice has been adopted by the Chinese residents of this Colony of sending their letters for San Francisco to the Office of the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company, for transmission to their destination otherwise than through the Post Office, and as this practice is contrary to the laws of this Colony as well as those of the United States of America, Chinese and others are warned that persons so offending in future will be dealt with as the law directs.

It is hereby notified for general information that on and after the 1st August next, the Commission chargeable on Money Orders issued upon the United Kingdom at Hongkong, Shanghae and Yokohama will be as follows, viz.:-

On suis not exceeding £2,

Above £2 and not exceeding £5,

Above £5 and not exceeding £7,

His Excellency Major-General WHITFEILD, Commanding Her Majesty's Troops in China and Japan, and Lieutenant-Governor of Hongkong and its Dependencies, has been pleased to appoint THOMAS FITZ-ROY RICE, Esquire, Assistant Superintendent of Police, to be Acting Captain Superin- tendent, during the absence on leave of WALTER MEREDITH DEANE, Esquire, or until further notice.

Tenders will be received at this Office, until Noon on Monday, the 18th instant, for the repairs necessary to the Police Hulk John Adam.

Particulars of repairs and any further information can be obtained at the Office of the Captain Superintendent of Police, where a proper form of Tender can also be obtained.

No Tender will be received unless sent in the form required.

His Excellency the Governor directs it to be notified that from and after the 1st September next, no Signals will be made or answered from any of the Signal Stations in this Colony, except by means of the International Code of Signals.
