THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 9mm APRIL, 1870. -

Two Government "Steam" Engines and three "Hand" Engines also two "Hand" Engines of Chinese Associations, were present with Fire Ladders, Supply Curts and Hose Reels.

The No. 1 Steam Engine was ordered to proceed to the "Praya" at the end of "Hillier" Street. and the No. 2 Steam Engine to "Jervois" Street, at the end of "Hillier" Street, and the Hand Engines at "Jervois" Street, at the end of "Mercer's" Street; two lines of delivery hose were laid o from No. 1 Stean Engine, supplying two Tanks for the use of the other Engines. All were

brought satisfactorily into work excepting the Hand Engine of the "Nam-pak" Hong, which from the break- ing of a "crank" was unable to act; this Engine has since been repaired.

No. 1 Steam Fire Engine sank into a hole on the Praya, but was extricated by the application of two Jack-screws, as referred to in my Report of 5th March.

An Inspection of the Government Brigade was held at the "Cross Roads" at 4 P.M., 31st March. The "Steam" Engines, "Hand" Engines, Four Supply Carts, Hose-reels, Fire Ladders, Hooks and Ropes, Hose in use and in store, and personal equipment of the Firemen and implements examined and found clean and in good order.

Mr. Jones, R. N., Enginer, was present at both Inspections and reported that the Steam Engines were in perfect order.

The following Hydrographic Notice is published for the information of Mariners, and others whom it may concern.

The substance of this Notice, as soon as it is received on board, is to be inserted in red ink on the Charts affected by it; and introduced into the margin, or otherwise in the page, of the Sailing Directions to which it relates. See Instructions, Navigation and Pilotage, p. 172.

CHINA-YANG-TSZ-KIANG.

FIXED LIGHT ON GUTZLAFF ISLAND.

The Harbour master at Shanghai has given notice, that from the 1st day of November 1869, a light would be exhibite from a lighthouse recently erected on Gutzlaff island, at the entrance of the Yang-tsz-kiang.

The light is a fixed white light, elevated 270 feet above the level of the sea, and in clear weather should be seen from a distance of 20 miles.

The illuminating apparatus is dioptric or by lenses, of the third order.

When it is desired to attract the attention of passing vessels, a gun or guns will be fired and signals made. During fogs, guns will be fired in answer to the fog signals of passing vessels.
