THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 12TH MARCH, 1870.

An! whereas by "The Basses Lights Act, 1869" the Public Works Loan Commissioners are required, for the purpose of coustra tas the said lighthouse, to advance out of the moneys at their disposal which are available for advances under "The Harbours and Passin Tolls &c. Act, 1861," a sum or sumus not exceeding in the whole seventy thousand pounds, and the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury are authorized to guarantee jointly with the Secretary of State for India, the principal and interest of the said advances;

And whereas by the said Act it is farther provided that the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury shall not give the said guarantes until the dues to be paid in respect of the Great Basses Lighthouse and Little Basses Lightship have been fixed by Order in Council et such rate as they may think suflicient:

And whereas by the said Act it is further provided that so long as any money is due to the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasur▾ in respect of the sums advanced for the Little Basses Lightship the said dues shall not be altered without the consent of the

Commissioners:

And whereas by the said Act it is further provided that the dues levied under the authority of the principal Acts in respect of th› lighthouse on the Great Basses Rock, and in respect of the lightship near the Little Basses Rock, after deducting any expenses incurre in collecting the same, shall form one fund, which shall be applied for the purpose of paying the cxpenses incurred in erecting and maintaining such lighthouse and lightship, and for no other purpose whatever:

And whereas the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury consider that a due at the rate of one penny half-penny per ton to be paid by all ships passing and deriving benefit from the Great Basses Lighthouse and the Little Basses Lightship will be sufficient:

And whereas certain money is due to the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury in respect of the sums advanced for the Little Basses Lightship, and those Commissioners consent to the alteration of the said dues in manner herein appearing:

And whereas it is expedient that from the time at which a temporary light is exhibited at the Great Basses Rock, the dne now leviable in respect of the Little Basses Lihgtship, under the Order in Council of the eighteenth of May, one thousand eight hundred an sixty-five, should cease, and that one due at the rate of one penny half-penny a ton should be levied in respect of both the said Little Basses Lightship and the Great Basses Lighthouse:

And whereas the several classes of ships following; that is to say:

Every ship which in the same voyage by the southward of Ceylon shall cross a line drawn from the southernmost point of Ceylon t the nort-westernmost point of the Island of Sumatra, and also a line from the southernmost point of Ceylon, to Cape Gardatui, ou the eastern coast of Africa, and vice versâ:

Every ship which, in any voyage to or from any place in the Maldive Islauds, shall cross a line drawn from the southernmost poin of Ceylon to the north-westernmost poiut of Sumatra:

Every ship which in any voyage from any port on the eastern coast of Africa, south of Cape Gardafui, or from any port it Malagascar, Bourbon, Mauritius, or any island adjacent to the same, including the Seychelles and the Chagos Islands, or in any vovar in which such ship shall have rounded the Cape of Good Hope eastward, shall cross a line drawn from the southernmost point of Ceylon t the southernmost point of the coast of Tenasscrim, and shall, between the first day of April and the thirtieth day of September, bot included, arrive at any port situate north of such line:

Every ship which, having departed between the first day of October and the thirty-first day of March, both included, from any por situate to the northward of such light, and also to the westward of the ninetieth meridian of longitude east from Greenwich, in any voyag to any port on the eastern coast of Africa south of Cape Gardafui, or to any port in Madagascar, Bourbon, Mauritius, or any island adjace thereto, including the Seychelles and the Chagos Islands, or in any voyage in which such ship shall round the Cape of Good Hope westwar shall cross the latitude of the said light on the eastward side of the said light, will pass the said lightship at the Little Basses Rock an the said light at the Great Basses Rock, and will derive benefit therefrom:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers vested in Her by the said recited Acts, by and with the advice of Her Priv Council, is pleased to direct that from and after the exhibition of the said temporary light, the dues leviable in respect of the said lig! ressel upon the Little Basses Rock, under the said Order in Council of the 18th May, 1865, shall cease; and that from and after si exhibition the dues in respect of the Great Basses Lighthouse and the Little Basses Lightship, to be paid for every such ship as aforesai shall be one penny half-penny per ton of the burden of every such ship, for every such voyage as aforesaid.

Tenders will be received at the Colonial Secretary's Office, until Noon on Wednesday, the 231 instant, for supplying the undermentioned Articles of Provisions to the Police Force, for Six Mont from the 1st proximo.

Rice, Dholl, Ghee and Fish (dry salted) per pecul.

The Articles must be of good quality, deliverable at the Central Police Barracks at such tim and in such quantities as may be required.

Samples to be produced at the time of the opening the Tenders.

Any further information can be obtained on application at the Office of the Captain Superinten ent of Police.
