pie Past:--The reef off this point can be passed close to; it appears to extend from the coast about 24 cables in a north-west Bay:--The sand bank off Chappoo uncovers at low water, but it is placed too far out; II.M.S. Bouncer, in steaming from 4 of the bay, passed 2 miles to the northward of it. Heong-po, which is placed on the chart 2 miles to the southward of its
in, is a good anchorage during a typhoon.
Just to the northward of Hoi-ta is a reef covered at low water, about 3 miles long, and three quarters of a mile from the saching it the soundings decrease rapidly from 7 to 3 fathoms, and then to 8 feet, in a distance of 200 yards. Between as and Hoi-ta good water can be obtained, but the shore is foul for the distance of one mile from the beach. Two small standing in the plain by themselves, and in front of the range behind them, form good land marks for Hoi-ta to vessels com- the unth-west: from the north-east these hills appear as one, but are still remarkable.
funt:--Slight shelter will be found here in the south-west monsoon, and a little good water may be obtained. The coast is terazen Hoi-ta and this point. A low sand extends from this point to Back-li Bay, with a ridge of hills 3 or 4 miles inland.
A reef
Boy:--A low sandy beach runs from the spit off See-ku-sha point, the north horn of the bay, to the point marked "reef” art, where it terminates in a curious domed shaped hillock visible some distance to seaward, and making like an island. ers at high water, and extends about 200 yards from the shore, runs from this point to the anchorage off the water port of Back-li, *sas Tung-tow, which is a small creek in the sand, with a depth of from 5 to 6 feet at high water. Between Tung-tow and See- * pont there are sand flats on which the sea breaks: a depth of 21 fathoms at low water was found at a distance of about 2 miles

ali bay is a bad anchorage in the south-west monsoon.
a in k-li bay the Bouncer passed about three miles from Pyramid point, and steering 6 miles off the land kept outside all the A low sandy beach with hills from 4 to 5 miles inland extends round the whole of the west coast.
Nietor is a ball anchorage, having only shelter for junks in a small creek. Two islands marked on the chart as 10 miles W. by N. Batton island (which lies off Nychow) do not exist. Two hills standing on the low sandy point which extends further out than is
wa, and appearing as islands to vessels coming from the south-cast or north-west, may account for this error.
Current:--During the passage from Gow-tow island to Hoi-how on the north coast of Ilainan a current of 3 kuots an hour was et need to the N.N.E.: this was after south and south-westerly winds of a week's duration.
