At the request of the Government of Ceylon the following Notice to Mariners is published for general information.

BAY OF BENGAL.

Temporary Light near the Great Basses.

TRINITY HOUSE, LONDON, 29th October, 1889.

Notice is hereby given, that on or about the 15th March next, and thereafter during the time of building the Light House on the "Great Basses" Rocks off the S.E. Coast of Ceylon, a Light Vessel will be placed in 12 Fathoms Water about One Mile N.N.E. of the Rocks ;--and in order to distinguish her from the Light Vessel at the "Little Basses" which exhibits a White Flash every 11⁄2 Minute, and which is 20 Miles distant, the Light shewn will be Red revolving at intervals of 45 Seconds.

By day she will be distinguished by currying two Balls Vertically at the Main Mast Head.

The following Marine Notification received from the Government of India is published for general information.

Marine Notification, the 6th December 1869.

Under instructions from the Right Hon'ble the Secretary of State for India, His Excellency the Governor General in Council is pleased to direct that, in order to promote the exclusive use of the Commercial Code of Signals in Her Majesty's Indian Possessions, the use of Marryatt's Code of Signals shall be discontinued in all parts of India from the 1st July 1870, that on and after that date no signals will be made or answered from Government stations on shore or Her Majesty's ships at sea, except by means of the Commercial Code of Signals.
