GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

The following Letter, received from the Commissioners for making Improvements in the Port of Calcutta, is published for general information.

By Command,

Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 18th April, 1872.

CECIL C. SMITH, Acting Colonial Secretary.

OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONERS FOR MAKING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PORT OF CALCUTTA.

6 COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS, the 18th March, 1872.

From W. D. BRUCE, Esq., Vice-Chairman.

To the SECRETARY to the Government of HONGKONG.

SIR, The Commissioners for making Improvements in the Port of Calcutta have in store the undermentioned Anchors, Buoys, Shackles, Chains and Mooring Gear, which having been replaced in this Port by Screws and Buoys of a larger description to suit the heavier mooring Gear lately introduced, they are now desirous of disposing of. Many of the Buoys are in first rate condition having been a very short time in use, and most of the material, though no longer suited to the purposes of this Port, might be advantageously used for purposes connected with Channel and Coast marks. Some of the material is being so utilised for the Channels leading to this Port, but the quantity in store is so large that it would take years to be entirely utilised here, and it is therefore considered desirable to look beyond the Port for opportunities of using up the spare material. With this view I have the honor to solicit that should such an oppor- tunity occur under your Government, you would be good enough to indent upon the Port Commissioners, who will be able to supply any of the undermentioned articles at very low rates.-I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient Servant,

SPARE MOORING MATERIAL.

187 Auchors of sizes from 75 to 20 cwt.

172 Buoys.

548 Rings for 2 inch, 14 Chain.

3,551 fathoms Chain 2 inch 1.

506 Shackles for 255 Swivels.

do.

W. DUFF BRUCE,

Vice-Chairman.
