The following Report on the Fire Brigade for the months of July and August by the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, is published for general information.
By Command,
CECIL C. SMITH, Acting Colonial Secretary.
Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 18th September, 1875.
[No. 14.]
FIRE BRIGADE Department,
HONGKONG, 18th September, 1875.
SIR,-I have the honour to forward to you, for the information of His Excellency the Administrator, the Report of the Fire Brigade for the months of July and August last.
During the early part of the month of July, No. 2 Steam Engine, which had become unfit for service from the tubes leaking during the fire on the 23rd June, was put into order.
A Parade and Inspection was held on the 29th July, at which all the Government Engines and three Chinese Association Engines were present. No. 2 Steam Engine was found to work well, as did all the other Engines, excepting No. 1 Steam Engine, which, although throwing water, did not do so satisfactorily. On the 3rd August, No. 1 Steam Engine was again worked and found thoroughly in order.
The Engines, hose and equipment generally, were examined on the 20th August, the Manual Engines were worked, and all found clean and correct.
A Parade and Inspection was ordered on the 31st August, at which the Hongkong Insurance Company Volunteer Brigade had engaged to attend, but owing to the heavy rains it was necessarily postponed; the inclement weather continued during the early part of September, but on the 15th September, the Engines (Manual and Steam), also three Manual Engines of the Chinese Associations, assembled at the Central Fire Brigade Station, and after examination of the hose, implements, ladders, fire hooks, &c., were taken to the Praya at Queen Street and worked from the sea; all worked satis- factorily.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
The Honourable CECIL C. SMITH,
Acting Colonial Secretary,
HONGKONG
C. MAY, Superintendent, Fire Brigade.
