FIRE BRIGADE DEPARTMENT,

HONGKONG, 16th February, 1875-

SIR,---I have the honour to report for the information of His Excellency the Governor, that the shopkeepers of the village of Yau-ma-tí, British Kowloong, have expressed their desire to form s Volunteer Fire Brigade, and to subscribe a sum, which will probably amount to $200, towards the purchase of a suitable fire engine and equipment. As this appears a very desirable thing to encourage, and that it is hoped the example may lead to similar formations at other large villages in the Colony. I beg to recommend the subject to the favourable consideration of His Excellency, and to ask that a sum not exceeding two hundred dollars, will be authorized by Government, to add to the amount of subscription before mentioned, the total (say $400) being adequate to purchase a suitable engine, and equipment.

I also ask that I may be authorized to expend a sum not exceeding sixty dollars, to furnish uniform jackets, trowsers and bamboo hats for twenty-fire volunteers.
