Gazette on the 26th day of October, 1852, and the Order in Council relating to seamen who desert from the merchant ships belonging to subjects of the Grand Duke of Oldenburg, made, by virtue of the aid Act, on the 13th day of June, 1853, and published in the London Gazette on the 14th day of June, 1853, and the Order in Council relating to seamen who desert from the merchant ships belong- ing to subjects of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, made, by virtue of the said Act, on the 9th day of March, 1854, and published in the London Gazette on the 10th day of March, 1854, and the Order in Council relating to seamen who desert from the merchant ships belonging to subjects of the King of Hanover, made, by virtue of the said Act, on the 8th day of June, 1854, and published in the London Gazette on the 13th day of June, 1854, shall be revoked, and the same are hereby revoked accordingly.

And the Secretary of State for the Home Department, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and the Secretary of State for India in Council, are to give the necessary directions herein accordingly.

AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND GERMANY RELATIVE TO MERCHANT SEAMEN DESERTERS.

Signed at London, November 5th, 1879.

THE Government of Her Majesty the Queen the United Kingdom of Great Britain and freland, and the Government of His Majesty the German Emperor, King of Prussia, being desirous, for the benefit of the commerce of the two countries, to facilitate the discovery, apprehension, and sur- render of seamen who may desert from merchant vessels of either country, on the basis of a full and entire reciprocity, have agreed as follows:-

It is mutually agreed that if any seamen or apprentices, not being slaves, should desert from any ship belonging to a subject of either of the Contracting Parties, within any port in the ter- ritories or in the possessions or colonies of the ther Contracting Party, the authorities of such pert and territory, possession or colony, shall be und to give every assistance in their power for the apprehension and sending on board of such deserters, on application to that effect being made them by the Consul of the country to which the ship of the deserter may belong, or by the deputy or representative of the Consul.

It is understood that the preceding stipulations. ll not apply to subjects of the country where the desertion shall take place.

Each of the two High Contracting Partics Serves to itself, the right of terminating this Agement at any time, on giving to the other a her's notice of its wish to that effect.

DIE Regierung Ihrer Majestät der Königin des Vereinigten Königreichs von Gross Britannien und Irland, und die Regierung Seiner Majestät des Deutschen Kaisers, Königs von Preussen, haben, um im Interesse des Handels beider Länder die Verfolgung, Ergreifung und Auslieferung von Seeleuten zu erleichtern, welche von Kauffahrteis-- chiffen eines der beiden Länder entweichen, unter der Bedingung voller und ganzer Gegenseitigkeit folgende Vereinbarung getroffen :-

Wenn Seeleute, auch Schiffsjungen, so fern es sich dabei nicht um Sclaven handelt, von Schiffen eines Angehörigen eines der beiden vertragschlies- senden Länder in Häfen, Territorien, Besitzungen oder Colonien des anderen der beiden vertragschlies- senden Theile entweichen, so sollen die Behörden in diesen Häfen, Territorien, Besitzungen und Colonien auf Antrag des Consuls derjenigen Nation, zu welcher das Schiff des entwichenen Seemanns gehört, oder seines Bevollmächtigten oder Vertre- ters, gehalten sein, Behufs Verfolgung und Ergreifung solcher Seeleute sowie Behufs deren Zurückführung an Bord des Schiffs jeden in ihrer Macht stehenden Beistand zu gewähren.

Es herrscht Einverständniss darüber, dass die vorstehende Bestimmung keine Anwendung gegen Angehörige des Landes findet, wo die Entweichung stattgefunden hat.

Jeder der beiden vertragschliessenden Theile behält sich das Recht vor, das gegenwärtige Abkommen jederzeit dergestalt zu kündigen, dass dasselbe mi. Ablauf eines Jahres von der Kündi- gung an gerechnet ausser Kraft tritt.

Zu Urkund dessen haben die Unterzeichneten die gegenwärtige Vereinbarung unterzeichnet und ihr Siegel beigedrückt.

In doppelten Exemplaren ausgefetigt, London, den fünften November ein tausend acht hundert und neun und sicbenzig.
