On the 17th at 12.25 P "The Japanese observations of yesterday afternoon, received here this morning, show that a depression was lying then to the S. of the Loochoos. The returns both from Japan and Formosa are lacking this morning. The barometer has fallen slightly over China and remains low, about 0.15 inch below normal over the coast generally. It is also about 0.1 inch in defect over the Philippines. Unsettled, squally weather will continue to prevail in the Formosa Channel and the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast:- "W. or variable winds, moderate or fresh; squally, thunder showers."

On the 20th at 12.20 p.- "The barometer has risen at the mouth of the Yangtze, and fallen in Shantung. The area of low pressure is still lying over the Yellow Sea. Pressure is high over E. Japan, and it appears to be low over the Pacific to the S. of the Loochoos. Light or moderate variable winds are indicated in the Formosa Channel and along the Northern shores of the China Sea." Forecast" Variable winds, light or moderate; showery."

On the 21st at 11.55 a. "The barometer has risen moderately over the N.E. coast of China, and fallen slightly over S. China and the Philippines. A low pressure trough appears to be lying over the N. part of the China Sea and extending Eastwards over the Pacific to the S. of the Loochoos. It may give rise to a circular depression. The low area lying over the Yellow Sea appears to have entered Shantung yesterday afternoon. Moderate or fresh, N.E. and E. winds may be expected in the Formosa Channel and along the Northern shores of the China Sea.' Forecast"N.E. and E. winds, moderate or fresh; squally, showery."

On the 22nd at 11.45 a.— "The barometer has fallen moderately over the Loochoos, and is little changed elsewhere. A depression, probably a typhoon, is situated to the S.E. of the Loochoos. It appears to be moving slowly towards N.W. at present. A second centre may develop to the South of Hongkong, in the low pressure trough lying over the N. part of the China Sea. Fresh to strong N.E. and E. winds are likely to prevail in the Formosa Channel and along the Northern shores of the China Sea." Forecast :-"N.E. and E. winds, fresh or strong; squally showery."

On the 23rd at 11.45 a." The barometer has fallen slightly in the neighbourhood of Hongkong, and risen a little over the E. coast of China and the Philippines. A circular depression appears to have formed or to be forming over the China Sea to the Southward of Hongkong, probably in from 18° to 20° Lat. Pressure is high, about 0.1 inch above the normal over N. China, while it is about 0.1 inch below the average at the stations around the N. part of the China Sea. Strong N.E. winds will prevail in the Formosa Channel and along the Northern shores of the China Sea. The Japanese returns are lacking this morning." Forecast N.E. winds, strong; squally, rain later." 4.40 p.-Orders issued to hoist the Black Cone point downwards.

On the 24th at 12.10 p.--"The barometer continues to fall slowly in the neighbourhood of Hongkong, while it has risen slightly over Formosa and the Philippines. The depression is still lying to the Southward of Hongkong, probably in about 19° to 20° Lat. It appears to be moving very slowly towards W.N.W. or N.W. The depression lying to the S.E. of Loochoos on the 22nd, has reached the S. coast of Japan. Pressure remains high over N. China. Fresh N.E. and E. winds may be expected in the Formosa Channel, and strong cyclonic winds over the N. part of the China Sea.” Forecast:-"N.E. to E. winds, strong; squally, showery." 3.00 p.-Orders issued to hoist the Black Cone point downwards and Ball. "The depression to the S.W. of Hongkong appears to be moving towards the neighbourhood of Hainan Straits."

On the 25th at 3.00 a.--Signal lowered. 12.05 p.- "The barometer has risen moderately in the neighbourhood of Hongkong, and a slight increase of pressure has occurred also over Formosa and the Philippines. The depression has probably moved into the Gulf of Tongking. The depression in the North lies over S. W. Japan. Pressure remains somewhat high over Central and N. China. Moderate N.E. winds may be expected in the Formosa Channel, and fresh S.E. and S. winds over the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast : "S.E. winds, moderate; squally, showery."

On the 26th at 11.55 a.- "6 neighbourhood of Haiphong.'

Yesterday afternoon the depression was approaching the

7th August, 1907.
