Three months. according to the sounds of the oldest dialect of China, the Cantonese, it gives also the Mandarin pronunciation of all characters explained in the book, so that its usefulness is by no means con- practically complete Thesaurus of the whole fined to the Cantonese Dialect, but the work is a Written Language of China, ancient and modern, as used all over the Empire, whilst its intro- ductory chapters serve the purposes of a philolo- gical guide to the student.
