The entry of observations in degree squares for the area named in my last annual report has been continued and 31260 observations, distributed as shown by the following table, have been so entered during 1893. It is to be regretted that more time cannot be spent on this work. At the present rate of progress, it is not expected that sufficient data for the construction of pilot charts will have been collected and made available until the expiration of another five years. By aid of such charts, when constructed, a shipmaster will know the normal conditions as regards wind, weather and pressure in the latitude and longitude his vessel may at the time happen to be situated in, and this, combined with a knowledge of the "Law of Storms in the Eastern seas ", should be of great assistance to him and enable him to so navigate his vessel as to avoid typhoons. They will, in fact, serve to some extent in lieu of storm warnings at sea, besides being valuable as shewing the most favourable routes at all times.
