SIR, With reference to Lord KNUTSFORD'S Circular despatch of the 13th August, 1889, I have the honour to transmit to you, for information and publication in the Colony under your Government, copies of an Order of the Queen in Council, dated the 22nd February last respecting the tonnage measurement of ships of the German Empire.

PRESENT,

THE QUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY IN COUNCIL.

HEREAS by an Order in Council, dated the 23rd day of July, 1889, made by Her Majesty in

WHEREAS of the powers conferrel upon Her by the Merchant Shipping Act Amendment Act,

1862, Her Majesty was pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to direct as follows :- 1. As regards Sailing Ships that Merchant Sailing Ships of the German Empire, the measurement whereof after the 1st day of January, 1873, has been ascertained and denoted in the registers and other national papers of such sailing ships, testified by the date thereof, shall be deemed to be of the tonnage denoted in such registers and other national papers in the same manner denoted and to the same extent, and for the same purpose in, to, and for which the tonnage in the Certificate of Registry of British Sailing Ships is deemed to be the tonnage of such ships.
