No. 833.-The following Finding of the Marine Court of Enquiry held on the 15th December, 1931, to enquire into the circumstances attending the stranding of the British Steamship Planorbis, is published for general information.

FINDING.
We find that the S.S. Planorbis Official No. 152082 of London of which Mr. Willium Fretwell (Certificate of Competency as Master No. 799 of Lyttelton New Zealand) was Master whilst proceeding on a voyage from Balik Papan to Hong Kong grounded at 1.12 a.m. on November 18th, 1931, in a position 131° I mile from Pearl Bank Light.
We find that the grounding was caused by an error in judgment on the part of the Master William Fretwell due to under-estimating the distance from the light at 11.38 p.m. on the 17th.
We adjudge that this under-estimating of the distance was due to an abnormal set of the tide and refraction and that therefore this error in judgment does not amount to culpability.
