(t) to understand thoroughly the precautions to be taken against fire or explosion from oil or gas, and how to deal with fire should it break out; also to be familiar with the action of wire gauze diaphragms, when placed in pipes and connections to oil tanks, etc., for the purpose of preventing the explosion or ignition of the oil vapour therein.

(6) in rule 32 for requirement (ƒ) read,—

(f) to know how the flash point of an oil is ascertained, and be capable of determining experimentally that of any sample when the neces- sary apparatus is provided.

(7) for rule 34 read,-

Endorsement

of Certificates. The holder of an Ordinary Certificate may, at any time, have it endorsed to the effect that he is competent for service in the appropriate capacity in motor ships, provided that he proves at least 9 months' service in foreign trade or 13 months in the home trade in a qualifying capacity, in motor ships of horsepower not less than that required by these rules, and passes the appropriate examination. The holder of a Motor Certificate may have it endorsed for service in steam- ships provided that he proves at least 12 months' service in foreign trade or 18 months in the home trade in a qualifying capacity in steamships of horsepower not less than that required by these rules and passes the appropriate examination.

Sea service performed in charge of a watch in vessels of the required horsepower whilst holding a Second Class Certificate, either Ordinary or Motor, will be accepted as qualifying for First Class Endorsement of either denomination, provided that in the case of an Ordinary endorsement the necessary experience has been gained. on both main engines and boilers of a steamship. (See rule 39).

(8) in rule 39 for the words commencing "In the case of applicants" and

ending "a maximum of 12 months" read, -

In the case of applicants for Second Class Motor Certificates, service to qualify must be on the main engines of not less than 373 brake horsepower and according to table.

In the case of applicants for First Class Motor Certificates, qualify- ing service means as a rule service as senior engineer in charge of the entire watch on the main propelling machinery of not less than 560 brake horsepower and according to table.
