V. Suitable recognition will be given for clear statements, reasoning and calcula- tions in solving the problems.

VI. Candidates may be required to write a report, or letter, in which English com- position and legible hand-writing will be taken into account; and bad grammar, faulty spelling and errors of punctuation will be discredited.

VII. Additional sheets of paper will be provided by the Examiner, if required. Only one side should be used, and the candidate should sign his name, and write the port and date, at the foot of each sheet. These particulars should also be given on the cover of each answer-book and on each sheet of drawing paper used.

VIII. Reference to the mathematical tables provided for the purpose is allowed, except in respect of questions which distinctly state that such reference is not per- missible.

IX. Candidates may, if they wish, use slide-rules for checking their calculations, but in each case the full working necessary for arriving at the result must be shown in ink, otherwise no significance will be attached to the answer.

X. The question papers and mathematical tables, which are the property of the Government, must not be written upon or defaced in any way.

XI. No candidate may leave his seat or the examination room without permission; and if he leaves the room he will not be permitted to go on with any sheet or problem which he had in hand before leaving the room.

XII. Candidates must not communicate with each other or use any unfair means. XIII. A candidate guilty of any breach of these rules will be subjected to all the penalties of failure, and may be excluded from further examination for such period as the Governor may decide.

54. Mathematical Tables (Rule VIII.). --All candidates for examination may use the books of mathematical tables provided, and the Examiner will be careful to observe that they are not used to conceal memoranda prepared for these examinations. No other books will be allowed unless the question set specially states that a book may be referred to.

55. Leaving Examination Room (Rule XI).-In the event of a candidate. being permitted to leave the room, the Examiner should substitute other questions for those which have not been attempted.

56. Penalty for Breach of Rules (Rule XIII).--The circumstances attending any breach of the Rules or Regulations, or any disorderly or improper conduct in or about the examination room, should be reported immediately to the Chief Examiner, who will in due course advise the Examiner as to any penalty the Government may decide to inflict.

57. Marking Worked Papers.-The value of the work done in all four sections of the First and Second Class examinations (Practical Mathematics, Drawing, Engineer- ing Knowledge, Verbals) will be assessed and recorded in accordance with the following scale-

In order to pass, candidate's work should be "Good" in all four sections, but it must be Good" or Superior" in Verbals. A Consider in either the Practical Mathematics, Drawing or Engineering Knowledge paper may be counterbalanced by a Superior" in any of the other sections. Two "Considers" or one Weak" will entail failure.
