A BILL

An Ordinance to amend the Waterworks Ordinance, 1938.

BE it enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Waterworks Short title. Amendment Ordinance, 1940.

2. Paragraph (a) of section 5 of the Waterworks Amendment Ordinance, 1938, is amended by the repeal of the words of Ordin ", annually, the amount due" in the sixth and seventh lines of 1938, thereof.

3. This Ordinance shall be deemed to have come into Commence- force on the first day of January, 1940, and the Ordinance it amends shall be construed accordingly.

Objects and Reasons.

1. Paragraph (a) of section 5 of the principal Ordinance provides for payment for water charges quarterly, or at such lesser periods as the Water Authority may in any case deter- mine, and for the payment of meter rent annually.

2. It is considered preferable to fix water rents at quarterly instead of annual rates and collect them quarterly.

3. This Bill provides accordingly for the repeal of the words in section 5 (a) which made meter rentals an annual charge.

4. It is intended to bring the new scheme into force on the 1st January, 1940.

5. Certain other adjustments will be necessary in the Regulations in the Schedule to the principal Ordinance, but these adjustments will be effected by amending Regulations made under section 29 of that Ordinance.
