the Minister may consider appropriate in his case having regard to his position, duties and the conditions of his employment or engagement.

(3) A mariner of the female sex who is, on the material date, employed or engaged on a British ship as a Stewardess shall be treated as holding on that date the status of a woman member of the Naval Forces with a status equivalent to an Able Seaman or below, and a mariner or member of the pilotage and light vessel services of the female sex who is, on the material date, employed or engaged on a British ship in a position other than that of Stewardess shall be treated as holding on that date such status equivalent to that of a woman member of the Naval Forces as the Minister may consider appropriate in her case having regard to her sex, position, duties and the conditions of her employment or engagement.

(4) A mariner or member of the pilotage or light vessel services who is, by virtue of paragraphs (1) or (2) of this Article, to be treated as holding an equivalent naval rank which is that of a commissioned or warrant officer of the Royal Navy shall be treated as an officer within the meaning of any provision of the Naval Order referring to an officer, and a mariner or member of the pilotage or light vessel services who is, by virtue as aforesaid, to be treated as holding an equivalent naval rank which is that of a man of the Royal Navy shall be treated as a man within the meaning of any provision of the Naval Order referring to a man.

(5) A mariner or member of the pilotage or light vessel services who is, by virtue of paragraph (3) of this Article, to be treated as holding the status of a woman member of the Naval Forces who has the status of an officer, shall be treated as being of officer status within the meaning of any provision of the Naval Order referring to a woman member of the Naval Forces with officer status.

8.-(1) An award to or in respect of a mariner or Provisions member of the pilotage or light vessel services shall be based as to ranks on the equivalent naval rank or status which that mariner or awards are member is to be treated, by virtue of the last preceding to be based. Article, as having held on the date on which that mariner or member sustained the war injury to which the death or dis- ablement of that mariner or member is directly attributable, or on the date of the commencement of the detention to which the death or disablement of that mariner or member is directly attributable.

Provided that where the Minister considers that, by reason of any circumstances existing in the case of a particular mariner or member of the pilotage or light vessel services, the award to or in respect of that mariner or member should be based on some higher equivalent naval rank which that mariner or member would be treated, by virtue of the last preceding Article, as holding at some other date (not being a date later than the end of the war), if that were the material date, he may direct that that award shall be based on that higher equivalent naval rank.

(2) If the disablement of a mariner or member of the pilotage or light vessel services is certified under this Part of this Scheme to be directly attributable to two or more war injuries or to two or more detentions, or to both a war injury
