17. At the entrance to every classroom there shall be prominently affixed a board or other permanent form of notice bearing an identification number or letter for such classroom, and stating the maximum number of pupils to be accommodated in that classroom in accordance with these regulations.

18.-(1) In every classroom there shall be kept exhibit- ed in a prominent place a certificate signed by an Inspector specifying which rooms may be used as classrooms, and stating the maximum number of pupils to be accommodated in each such room in accordance with these regulations.

(2) Such certificate shall also specify such additional health requirements as may be necessary for the proper and efficient conduct of the school or any part of the school.

(3) No more than the maximum number of pupils specified in such certificate shall be permitted to occupy any classroom without the written sanction of an Inspector.

19. In the case of a school occupying a floor in a tenement-house, the floor shall be used exclusively as a classroom, and no partitions whatever shall be erected or maintained therein except by the express written permission of the Director: provided that, in every case where no separate living room is provided on the same floor, nothing in this regulation shall be deemed to preclude a manager, who has first obtained the written permission of the Director, from separating off, by means of a partition or partitions not more than six feet in height, a single room or cubicle for his own occupation at such position on the floor as may be approved by the Director.

20. Every classroom shall be swept out daily at least two hours before the opening of the school, and the floors of every classroom shall be washed and treated at least once a week with a dust laying disinfectant.

21. Before a new school is registered the manager shall provide desks or tables and seats of a type approved by the Director, and all such desks, tables and seats shall be of a size suitable for the pupils for whom they are intended.

In a school where technical subjects are to be taught, the manager shall provide adequate equipment and apparatus for the teaching of such subjects to the satisfaction of the Director.

22. If required to do so in writing by the Director, the manager of a school shall substitute desks, tables or seats of a type and size approved by the Director for those already in use.

23. (1) Unless an Inspector shall otherwise order, the manager shall cause the pupils' desks to be arranged so that the main source of light falls upon the left of the pupils.

(2) If so ordered by an Inspector, the manager shall cause to be provided blackboards having a dull matt surface of an approved colour. Letters and characters written on such boards shall be not less than one inch in height.
