ORDINANCE No. 10 of 1899. (MERCHANT SHIPPING). Wireless Telegraphy,

The attention of shipowners is invited to the new Rule 5 (2) (b) of the Merchant Shipping (Wireless Telegraphy) Rules 1988 dated 15th December, 1938, Statutory Rules and Orders 1938 No. 1546) made by the Board of Trade, which came into force on the 1st January, 1939.

The said rule provides that :—

As from and after the 1st January, 1940, the use of waves of Type B of all frequencies (damped waves such as are emitted by spark transmitters) is forbidden in all radio- electric communication stations, except for transmitters of ships which when working on full power, take less than 300 watts measured at the terminals of the alternator.

Shipowners are therefore hereby advised that :-

(a) Vessels employing spark installations in excess of 300 watts as defined above, should either change their apparatus prior to 31st December, 1939, or take steps to have the installations modified to bring them within the specified power limit.

(b) Vessels compulsorily fitted with wireless telegraphy under Board of Trade regulations, and whose installations at present are of a power on full load in excess of 300 watts as specified above, can only as from the date of the above regulations, be issued with Passenger and Safety, Passenger Certificates, or Safety Radio-telegraphy Certificates, as the case may be, limited to 31st December, 1939.
