A typhoon within 60 miles of lat. 20° N., long. 122° E., splitting in two. Warning issued this afternoon.

The north coast of Hokkaido threatened by a gale from S.W. Warning issued yesterday afternoon.

The China Seas Storm Signal Code is used at the following Storm Signal Stations:-

1. (a.) The Stations of the Maritime Customs at Newchwang, Taku, Chefoo, Chin- kiang, Woosung, Gutzlaff, Pagoda Anchorage, and Amoy'

(b.) The French Municipal Station at Shang-

hai

(c.) The British Station at Weihaiwei

(Storm Warnings are also issued to, but are not signalled from, An- tung, Chinwangtao, Hankow, Ningpo, Chinhai, and Wenchow.)

In connexion with Storm

Sikawei Observatory.

2. The Station of the Maritime Customs at Royal Observatory, Hongkong.

The China Seas Storm Signal Code is issued by joint agreement between the Obser- vatories at Sikawei and Hanoi, and the Chinese Maritime Customs. It will come into

operation at the Storm Signal Stations named above on the 1st February, 1918. The date of it coming into operation at the Storm Signal Stations of the Hanoi Observatory will be notified later by that Observatory.

The Astronomical positions are only approximate unless seconds are given. The bearings are given both True and Magnetic, and those relating to lights are from seaward. The visibility of lights is that in clear weather. Fog signals are sounded only in thick or foggy weather. The elevation given is the height of focal plane above high water.

AUSTRALIA SOUTH EAST COAST.

Gabo Island Light-Alteration in Character.

MARINERS and others are hereby notified that the character of the light on Gabo Island has been altered from Occulting with White and Red Sectors to Group Flashing with White and Red Sectors.

Position.-Lat. 37° 34′ S.; Long. 149° 55′ E.
