(b) Whenever considered necessary, and in any case at intervals not exceeding 12 months, every life jacket must be inspected and tested in water to verify that the weight of iron specified in the above regulations (para. 184) can be supported by it. If the jacket is of the type which contains kapok packing, care should be taken during inspection to ensure that the kapok is intact.

4. When a lifebelt of one of the above-mentioned types has been used and immersed in water, it must first be dismantled, cleaned and thoroughly dried, and then subjected to any examination and tests as set out in para. 3 above for the type concerned.
