19. To promote research within the University and to require reports from time to time on such research.
20. To review, refer back, control, amend or disallow any act of the Senate and give directions to the Senate without prejudice to the rights of the Senate under paragraph 9 of this Section. 21. To entertain, adjudicate upon, and if thought fit redress any grievances of the Officers of the University, the Professors, the Teach- ing Staff, the Graduates, Undergraduates and the University Servants who may for any reason feel agrioved otherwise than by the action of the Court.
22. To select a Seal, Arms and a Mace for the University subject to the approval of the Court and have the sole custody and use of the Seal.
23. To approve Halls, Hostels and quarters for the residence of Undergraduates and to frame or approve Regulations for the same. 24. To appoint (subject to the approval of the Court) the Committee of selection referred to in Section 4 (20) of the Ordinance.
Statute 9.
THE SENATE.
(1.) The Senate shall consist of the following per-
sons :-
(a.) The Vice-Chancellor.
(b.) The Professors and Staff Lecturers of the
University.
(.) The Director of Education.
(d.) A Number of other lecturers equal to that of the Staff Lecturers to be nominated by the Boards of the Faculties, approved by the Council and appointed by the Court. The Board of each Faculty shall be entitled to nominate such number of lecturers for this purpose as the Court, having due regard to the proportionate representation of each Faculty upon the Senate, shall determine: Provided that in the nomination of Members representing the Faculty of Medicine the persons who on the day on which the University is declared to be Lecturers in the College of open are Medicine shall have priority of claim over any other lecturers for nomination to the Senate;
Provided also that the Senate shall be deemed to be sufficiently constituted for the purpose of transacting business as soon as five of its members have been appointed. (2.) Five members of the Senate shall form a quorum.
Statute 10.
POWERS OF THE SENATE.
The Senate shall have the powers following :
1. To have the direction and general regulation of the instruction and education within the University and the Examinations held by the University (subject to the control of the Council).
2. To appoint Internal Examiners after report from the Board of Faculty or Boards of Faculties concerned.
