THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, OCTOBER 26, 1934.

COLONIAL SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT.

No. 807. The following Finding of the Marine Court of Enquiry held on the 17th October, 1934, to enquire into the circumstances attending the stranding of the British Steamship City of Cambridge, is published for general information.

26th October, 1934.

D. W. TRATMAN,

Colonial Secretary.

FINDING.

We find that the S. S. City of Cambridge, Official No. 144236 of Glasgow, of which Mr. Reginald Elias Teague (Certificate of Competency as Extra Master No. 007276 of Plymouth) was Captain, left Manila at 2.53 p m. on October 3rd on a voyage to Hong Kong. On October 4th, the ship ran into bad weather due to a heavy typhoon, crossing Luzon and moving to the Westward. The ship was navigated in accordance with the law of storms, instructions laid down both in the sailing directions and on the Admiralty Chart and finally struck a reef at 5.05 a.m. on October 6th, which was later ascertained to be Pratas Reef. We find that Captain Teague navigated his ship in a seamanlike manner, allowing ample margin for leeway and took every precaution that it was possible to take for the safety of his ship, and we therefore adjudge him to be exonerated from all blame and we ascribe the cause of the casualty to the abnormal conditions and Easterly set experienced at the time.

Given under our hands at Victoria, in the Colony of Hong Kong, this 17th day of October, 1934.

(Signed)

G. F. HOLE, Comdr.,

Stipendiary Magistrate and President of the Court.
