No. 198. The following Finding of the Marine Court of Enquiry held on the 16th March, 1933, to enquire into the circumstances attending the stranding of the British Steamship Antung, is published for general information.

FINDING.

We find that the S.S. Antung Official No. 154003 London of which Reginald Harold Gordon Ashby, who holds a Certificate of Competency No. 3888 Hong Kong, was Master, left Swatow on 4th March, 1933, on a voyage to Singapore via Hoihow.

That there were on board 420 passengers and a crew of 110.

That the ship stranded on Hainan Island at 3.49 a.m. on 6th March, 1933, and was subsequently abandoned.

That the causes of the stranding were an abnormal current and mist obscuring the land.

That when the ship was abandoned, the boats were rushed and approximately 50 passengers and 20 of the crew lost their lives.

The Court has taken into consideration the experience of the Master of the S.S. Raby Castle, who is a member of this Court and who also observed an abnormal current when approaching Hong Kong.

That no. blame attaches to the Master or Officers, and that the ship was navigated

proper and seamanlike care.
