Explanatory Notes.

Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, and from whom certificates of death can be obtained. Col. 1.--The letters E. (England), S. (Scotland), and I. (Ireland) denote the Registrars General of Births and Deaths to whom the death is reported as required by the

Col. 2.—The letter (P.) under the name of a seaman indicates that he was a passenger at the time.

Col. 2.-Particulars of deceased seamen whose names have not been ascertained, and of seamen who have been found dead but not identified, are entered under "Unknown". Col。 4.--An asterisk denotes that the deceased was an Asiatic serving under Asiatic agreement. Col, 10.-Names of vessels of Foreign Nationality are printed in Italies.
