(c.) He must understand how to correct defects due to corrosion and decay in
boilers.
(d.) He must be able to state how a temporary or permanent repair could be effected in case of derangement of a part of the machinery, or total break- down.
(e.) He must be able to calculate safety valve pressures, whether dead weight,
lever or spring-loaded.
(f.) He must understand the case of the slide valve, and the setting of the same. (9.) He must understand how to set lines of shafting, and how to increase or
diminish the speed of the same by means of pulleys, or tooth gearing. (h.) He must write a legible hand, and his knowledge of arithmetic must include
the extraction of the square root.
12. First Grade Engineer :—A candidate for a First Grade Engineer's Certificate must be 22
years of age.
In addition to the qualifications required for a Second Grade Engineer-
(a.) He must be in possession of a Second Grade Engineer's Certificate and must prove that he has actually been in charge of engines and boilers for at least one year with a Second Grade Engineer's Certificate.
(b.) He must be able to make rough working drawings of the different parts of
the engines and boilers.
(e.) He must have a good general knowledge of boiler construction, and be able to
calculate the working pressure from given dimensions.
(d.) He must understand the different methods of setting land boilers.
(e.) He must understand the making of foundations for engines, boilers, chimneys,
etc., and have a general knowledge of brickwork.
(.) His knowledge of arithmetic must include the mensuration of superficies and
solids and the extraction of the cube root.
Provided that a Certificate of Competency as First Class Engineer issued by the Marine Department of the Board of Trade, or in any of His Majesty's Colonies by competent authority, may be accepted in lieu of a First Grade Engineer's Certificate, and a Certificate of Competency as Second Class Engineer issued by the Marine Departinent of the Board of Trade, or in any of His Majesty's Colonies by competent authority, may be accepted in lieu of a Second Grade Engineer's Certificate. Provided also that any Engineer arriving in the Colony in charge of a steam boiler who can satisfy the Inspector as to his competency and that he has been in charge of boilers of above 25 nominal Horse-power for a period of two years, shall be entitled to a First Grade Engineer's Certificate.
13. The examination for the above certificates shall be partly vivâ voce and partly by examination papers, and shall be conducted by examiners appointed by the Governor.
Re-examination in case of failure of Engineers.
14. If the applicant fails in the viva voce or practical part of the examination, he may not present himself for re-examination until he can produce proof of three months' further service. In the case of a Second Grade Examination this service must be in a workshop, or an assistant in some factory. In the case of a First Grade Examination, the applicant must have been in charge of engines and boilers for that period.

15. Second Grade Engine-driver.-A candidate for a Second Grade Engine-driver's Certificate must be 21 years of age.
(a.) He must have served as Fireman to any boiler for a period of not less than
two years.
(b.) He must understand the uses of the various cocks and valves or a condensing
engine and boiler.、
(c.) He must be able to answer the necessary verbal questions and satisfy the examiner that he is capable of taking charge of an engine and boiler under
