TEMPORARY LIGHT DISCONTINUED; FORMER CHARACTER
OF LIGHT RESUMED.
REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 469, notice is hereby given that on or about the 2nd October the temporary Light on Steep Island will be discontinued, and the former advertised character of Steep Island Light will be resumed.

SANITARY DEPARTMENT.
No. 605.-It is hereby notified that tenders will be received at the Colonial Secretary's Office until noon of Tuesday, the 12th October, 1909, for the general surface scavenging of and the removal of household and trade refuse, anini. manure and nightsoil from certain villages and districts situate on the Island of Hongkong in accordance with the conditions of contracts which may be seen at the office of the Secretary to the Sanitary Board, Beacons- field.
The contracts will be for a period of three years from the 1st January, 1910.
No tender will be considered unless the person tendering produces a deposit receipt from the Treasury (as a pledge of the bona fides of his tender) for a sum equal to 10 per cent, of the value of the security to be furnished by the contractor as stated below.
The successful tenderer will be required to sign a formal contract containing conditions- to be prescribed by the Board and also to give security to the satisfaction of His Excellency the Governor in the following sums in respect of each contract, viz., Shankiwan and Quarry Bay, $150, Aberdeen and Aplichau, $200, and Stanley and Tai Tam, $100. Failing com- pliance with the latter requirements the sum deposited with the tender will be forfeited.
For form of tender apply at the Colonial Secretary's Office.
The Government does not bind itself to accept the lowest or any tender.
