THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, DECEMBER 10, 1926.

No. 680.-The following Finding of the Marine Court of Enquiry held on the 3rd day of December, 1926, to enquire into the circumstances attending the collision between the British Steamship Antung and a junk, is published for general information.

10th December, 1926.

W. T. SOUTHORN,

Colonial Secretary.

FINDING.

We find that at about 0.7 a.m. on 29th November, 1926, the S. S. Antung, Official Number 154003 of Hong Kong of which Mr. GEORGE ALFRED GRAHAM MORSE (Certificate of Competency No. 4 (N.S.W.) Sydney) was Master came into collision with an unnamed Junk in Lat. 21° 11' N., Long. 112° 47' E. and sank her involving loss of life to 15 persons in the Junk. We find that Mr. ALEXANDER WILLIAM GRANT GIBSON (Certificate of Competency as Master No. 0014304 of Glasgow) 3rd Officer of the S.S. Antung was in charge of the bridge at the time of the collision and did commit an error of judgment in underestimating his distance from the junk for which we adjudge him to be reprimanded. We further find that the evidence given by the Chinese witnesses from the Junk is unreliable. That the junk before the collision was on the port tack and that after the Antung's helm had been put to starboard went about thus affording the primary cause of the collision.

Given under our hands at Victoria, in the Colony of Hong Kong, this 3rd day of December, 1926.
