Lu Ping's press conference was prominently reported by the radio stations and ATV-Home in 'their main newscasts at 6 pm.
In addition to what had been reported earlier, Radio 1 quoted Lu Ping as saying that British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd had written to Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen that the 1995 elections in HK should be in line with the objectives laid down in the BL. i.e., the functional constituency seats should be returned by indirect rather than direct elections, and the Election Committee should comprise four major groups of people rather than DB members.
Mr Lu said he did not want to see Sino-British co-operation in other fields affected by the political question, but now he was a bit worried.
Radio 1 noted that Mr Patton had ended his Peking visit without narrowing the difference between the two sides over the question of political reforms at all.
Fred Li of Meeting Point said in an interview with Radio 1 that Mr Lu's criticisms of the political package was mild. He hoped the two sides would remain calm.
Frederick Fung of ADPL felt that the contents of the Sino-British talks behind closed doors. should be made known to HK people so that they could make a fair judgement.
In an interview with ATV-Home, Allen Lee said the tough stance of China and Britain would affect HK people's interests. Noting that HK's relations with China and Britain were facing a tough test, Mr Lee said if the British and HK Governments, did not take the initiative to solve the problem, there would be a confidence crisis in HK.
UDHK spokesman on infrastructure Albert Chan told ATV-Home that Mr Lu's strong remarks on the airport was part of China's "high-handed" tactics to pressurise the Government. The solution would be for China to respond to the British proposal on the funding package and to state clearly how much it wanted the Government to inject into the airport project. The Chinese side should not have made criticisms without making proposals.
