GUANGDONG NUCLEAR: PUBLIC CONCERN OVER SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
1.
14
Further to Martin Uden's letter (MNS 160/1) of 20 August to you, both we and other Departments concerned at this end would find it very helpful to have an early assessment of the strength of feeling in Hong Kong on the safety and environmental aspects of the proposed project. I know that a defensive line was prepared for the Prime Minister to take during her meetings with the media in Hong Kong, but so far as I am aware, the question was not raised. I have seen very little in the media in recent weeks.
2. In due course the question of a presentation in Hong Kong on the safety aspects may need to be considered, but before we get that far it is obviously essential to know where local feelings stand on the issue. In this connection, we have of course noted
the reference to the project's safety aspects in the Governor's recent address to LEGCO.
