GUANGDONG NUCLEAR AND CASTLE PEAK POWER PROJECTS

گیا

FG 714

1. The DOI's presentation on Guangdong and Castle Peak will now take place on the morning of 5 April instead of 25 March, because of a clash with the departure of the Guangdong Power Company/China Light and Power delegation now visiting the UK.

2.

Before the presentation you may wish to glance through the attached files, in particular the papers flagged.

3.

On Guangdong, the present position, in a nutshell, is that for the time being both the Anglo/US and the Anglo/French options are being kept open. This does not please Lord Kadoorie, who favours the French option, as his exchange with the Prime Minister shows.

4.

The Chinese, for their part, have still to reach a decision on the construction of a nuclear power station in preference to a conventional one, but their final conclusions are expected soon.

5.

As for the Castle Peak projects, 'Steam to set' at Castle Peak 'A' took place at the end of February. The Prime Minister is expected to perform the official opening ceremony during her visit this September. The order for the 'sister' Castle Peak 'B' power station, said to be the largest single export contract awarded to the UK, was placed in August 1981.
