27% while those on ferries continued to decrease by 8%. There were no other significant developments in the public transport

sector. For private transport, the number of registered

private cars continued to increase, although at a slower rate

of 10%. As for air transport, the number of passengers in the

first quarter was 15% higher than in the first quarter

of

1981. The number of aircraft movements was 5% higher, largely

because of an increasing number of flights to China using

narrow-bodied aircraft. The inward and outward movements of

cargo by sea in the first quarter of 1982 showed little change

compared with the first quarter of 1981 in terms of weight.

However, the corresponding movements of cargo by air increased

by 13% and 10% respectively.

The total number of visitors coming to Hong Kong in

the first quarter at 572 386 was 7% higher than in the same

period of last year. The average hotel occupancy rate in the

first quarter was 87%, somewhat higher than in

corresponding quarter of 1981.
