PROTECTION OF UK CITIZENS OF DEPENDENT TERAPORTEV THE COK

1.

We had a word a while ago about an approach from the Department of Tourism, Bermuda (which reached me via the Deputy Governor's Office, Hamilton and Consular Department here) expressing concern that no procedure appeared to exist for Bermudians who find themselves in any sort of 'consular' difficulties whilst in the UK (i.e. on holiday or business). Whilst British Consulates can render assistance to Bermudians who get into difficulties in third countries, no such procedure exists in the UK. The Bermuda Tourist Office in London do not have the resources to deal with some of the cases which arise.

2. The Deputy Governor's Office has suggested that Bermudians should, in these circumstances, be diverted to some agency such as the DHSS, the Home Office or the relevant local authority. You kindly offered to establish whether the problem had arisen with other dependencies or whether any procedure is laid down. I must confess I am unable to trace any.
