This is considered to be the most economic way (at least at this stage)

of segregating the microfilm records for the UK-related records to be

transferred to the Hong Kong BCG. The records so segregated are dated

since 1978 or earlier and will therefore cover all those you have asked

for. They will not take up too much space because they are microjackets stored in lektrievers. Both Howard Parkinson and Terry

Rooney have shown favour of this approach.

9.

As at March 1993, of the 6 millions microjackets we keep,

it is estimated that there are about 3.75 millions UK-related

microjackets relating to about 2.5 millions individuals (on the basis

of an average of 1.5 microjackets per individual). By March 1997, it

is estimated that the number of UK-related microjackets will increase

to about 6 millions. One lektriever can hold about 0.5 million

microjackets. On this basis, you may be able to work out the number of

lektrievers you will have to procure for the Hong Kong BCG. The

specifications, space and other environmental requirements of the

lektrievers that we are using are provided at Annex IV attached.

10.

In order that the segregation work can be completed by

March 1997, we will have to start the work in 1994/95. For this

reason, we now have to bid from the Central Government the necessary

resources for the task. I would therefore, be most grateful for your

agreement as soon as possible ( in any case, not later than August this

year) to our proposal for the segregation of microfilm records as

described in para 8 above so that we

that we cannot start work in 1994/95 and it will not be possible for us

to complete the task as scheduled.
