A. John

Thank you for your letter of 16 September about our new diplomatic premises in Hong Kong, which will house the Consulate General after the handover in 1997.

I am aware that bids for the site formation and foundation contract for the building came in at the end of August. I am glad that Gammon is among the bidders. I very much share your concern that the Consulate General should be a showpiece of the best British building expertise. So I plan to watch the tendering and selection process for the main building contract very carefully. I have written today to Alastair Goodlad at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to remind him of my concern and to ask him to keep in touch with us, especially on this case.

I wish Trafalgar House continuing success in all its activities in Hong Kong and the region. I too hope we can meet when I am there next month.
