FUTURE CONSULATE-GENERAL:

1.

PRIVATE TREATY GRANT

17

We have spoken about the points raised in the letter of 27 January from Johnson Stokes and Master. I explained to you that I saw some advantage in keeping the word "equivalent" to qualify "reinstatement" although I believe it was OED which originally proposed this language. Subject to the views of OED, "reinstatement" would appear to mean in this context setting up again or re-establishment in the new premises. Presumably this would cover matters such as facilities, eg car parking, of the Consulate-General.

2.

On the third point in the letter from Johnson Stokes and Master, I explained that I agreed with their proposed deletion of "and" in the third to last line of paragraph (b). Mr Savage was concerned that the consequence of the deletion would be that it would be the Chairman or President of the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Surveyors rather than the nominated chartered surveyor who would then act as the expert to determine the necessary sum. To avoid any potential problem, suggested replacing "to be nominated" in the sixth to last line in paragraph (b) by "who shall be nominated" and inserting a comma after "Surveyors" in the third to last line of that paragraph.
