questions. They simply commented that the Saniman case might therefore be rapidly accelerated, which would be no bad thing.
3. At Bertolas' request, I raised a further unrelated point. Saniman's lawyers at the Tribunal de Grande Instance had claimed that on 18 November the one month period provided for in the 1927 Statute for the authorities of the requesting state to take delivery of an extradited person would lapse and so Saniman could be released. We knew that this argument was invalid but to avoid even the slightest risk, I wanted to notify the Justice Ministry that we were prepared to take delivery of Saniman at any time.
Mme Poitou took note, and said that there was no chance of Saniman's argument being accepted. He would continue to try to be released from prison. The Justice Ministry would
continue to instruct the public prosecutor to oppose any such move. I welcomed this.

5. I am convinced that we were right to inform the Justice Ministry of a possible deal. There is no hint that the Justice Ministry
have taken it the wrong way, but we should keep our ears close to the ground. I am increasingly confident that the Justice Ministry are now on our side and will continue to rebut Saniman's arguments for his release. I hope that our taking them into our confidence in this way will also help.
