E. THE POSITION OF GEORGE TAN
F.
Tan was arrested in Hong Kong in connection with
these matters on 7 December 1985 The following month
saw the start of a very substantial prosecution of Tan
upon other Chalyes ("The Carian case") which lasted
until September 1987. He has also been charged with
other offences relating to the payment of corrupt
advantages to other bankers (the WestLD and Darclays
Asia charges), which cases now stand adjourned until
after the conclusion of the "BMFL" case. Tan has been
on bail (HK$50 million cash) and the "BMFL" proceedings
in his case have been adjourned over the years pending
the return to Hong Kong of Osman, the Attorney General
having decided that a joint trial of Tan and Osman was
in the public inbozzet.
WILL THESE ACCUSED RECEIVE A FAIR TRIAL?
It being the position that those representing
Saniman's interests in France have expressed doubts as
to the fairness of any trial of Saniman in Hong Kong,
it may be helpful to identity vertain. arports, of cur
procedures which will serve to guarantee that those
brought to justice in this case will be afforded
་
certain protections and will be treated properly and
fairly.
