We urge you to impress upon the "Schengen" countries the need to lift visa requirements for Hong Kong passport holders in their mutual interest. The BN (0) and BDTC passports are British passports: holders should enjoy equal treatment with the UK passport holders.

We understand that the British Government has already taken up the matter with the "Schengen" countries. We would like to know details of what has so far been done and what further action will be taken.

would also appreciate being informed of developments.

Hong Kong expects Britain to stand by her constitutional and legal obligations to our community and to fight for our interests. Gradual diminution of privileges for Hong Kong people will erode our standing as an international city. Worse still, it will undermine the confidence of Hong Kong people in the future. All this cannot be in the interest of Hong Kong or our trading partners.

I am copying this letter to the Governor of Hong Kong.
