INDIA/HONG KONG
1.
Four members of the Hong Kong Immigration Department who are on a month long familiarisation visit to the UK visited MVD on 29 September.
2. They said (amongst other things) that Hong Kong had experienced a perceptible increase in illegal immigration by Indian nationals and they would very much like to emulate us by imposing a visa requirement on them. What did we think?
3. I said that the question of relations between India and Hong Kong was a matter for the Government of Hong Kong. Since the Indians imposed a visa requirement on Hong Kong nationals, they could hardly complain on grounds of reciprocity, and the main problem might therefore be presentational, which should be soluble. On UK/India relations, I said I saw no difficulty from MVD's point of view, but would consult my relevant geographical colleagues in case they did. Could you please
let me know?
