At this time of year my attention is drawn again to the plight of the few remaining widows of war veterans here in Hong Kong who are seeking a British passport.I am absolutely horrifed at the callous way that their request is being handled by the British Government which is stone walling them, hoping that if it waits long enough then the problem will go away.

These elderly women will probably never make the trip to Britain but I feel strongly that it is their right to have a British Passport. The Government's reply is that the women will have to comply with current Nationality legislation. However it is within your powers to ensure that they do comply and I urge you to reconsider their case, grant them a passport and let this whole business end. It shames me and my friends here, who are mercifully too young to have experienced the horrors of the Second World War in Hong Kong, to think that their mother country could behave in such a way. The treatment of these widows is unjust, unwarranted and totally immoral.

Tomorrow morning there is the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph. The people of Hong Kong will be looking at the survivors and also remembering those who did not survive. We will be giving silent thanks for all that they did for the Colony. We will also be remembering the inhumane British Government.

Whatever legacy you leave behind, Sir, I beg you to ensure that it includes twenty or so British passports for the poor war widows who deserve them.

Yours sincerely,

Their future rests with you. I would like to hear what you intend to do about it.
