NON-CHINESE ETHNIC MINORITIES IN HONG KONG

19th July, 1993

Following the vote in the House of Lords last Thursday I am writing to you as one of those who spoke in support of Lord Bonham-Carter's motion.

I happen to be a member of the Anglo-Hong Kong Trust; although this is a non-political charitable Trust, several of its members worked hard to assist the Government during the debate on the Hong Kong Passport Bill and they feel as I do, that the Government might now think it right to reconsider its position on the question of the ethnic minorities.

Perhaps it would be helpful to meet informally over lunch (I suggest a private room at Brooks's) with one or two friends from the Anglo-Hong Kong Trust to try and find a sensible way for the Government to take a more positive attitude to this matter, in view of the strong support such action would have both here and in Hong Kong.

The possible dates for this lunch are: Tuesday, Thursday, September 2nd; or Friday, September 10th. attended by Michael Miles of Swires and Algy Cluff.
