HONG KONG: STATUS OF ETHNIC MINORITY

1.

39

Please refer to Peking telno 477 (not to New Delhi). I now enclose a bundle of papers which give the latest state of play in this long-running debate. I am copying to New Delhi those which they do not already have.

2.

I see from TUR that you were not able to run to ground any confirmation of Lu Ping's reported remarks to the Indian Chamber of Commerce. (This arose from a request in Hong Kong 33 telno 494, paragraph 12, for confirmation of reports of recent

statements by the Chinese and Indian authorities on the issue of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.) The trail seems to have gone cold on this one.

Yours
